Squarespace accessibility checker

Check your Squarespace site for accessibility problems, then fix them in the Squarespace editor with the steps below. No code needed for most of them.

Accessibility on Squarespace

Squarespace controls the code behind your template, so most fixes are in your content and design settings. If your site uses custom code or code injection, check those parts with whoever added them.

How to fix common problems in Squarespace

Menus change over time. If a step doesn't match what you see, search the Squarespace help centre for the words in quotes.

Describe your images

  1. Click Edit on the page and double-click the image block.
  2. Fill in the “Alt text” (some layouts call it the image's filename or caption) with a short description.
  3. Click Save. For gallery images, open each image's settings and fill in its description.

Change your colours

  1. Click Site Styles (the paintbrush) › Colors.
  2. Edit your palette, or change the colour theme of the sections with low-contrast text.
  3. Click Save.

Use proper headings

  1. Edit the page and click into a text block.
  2. Select a section title and choose Heading 1–4 from the text format menu, in order.
  3. Click Save.

Reword your links

  1. Click Edit on the page and click into the text block.
  2. Select the link's words and type new wording that says where it goes.
  3. Click Save.

Label your form fields

  1. Edit the page and double-click the form block.
  2. Click each field and give it a clear Label.
  3. Click Save.

Give each page a title

  1. Open the Pages panel and click the cog next to the page.
  2. Go to the SEO tab and fill in the “SEO title”.
  3. Click Save.

Set your site language

  1. Go to Settings › Language & region.
  2. Choose your site language and save.

Stop links opening new tabs

  1. Edit the page and click the link.
  2. In the link editor, switch off “Open in new tab”.
  3. Click Save.

Stop things playing or moving on their own

  1. Edit the page and double-click the video or gallery block.
  2. Turn off Autoplay (or set slideshows to advance manually).
  3. Click Save.

Add captions to videos

  1. Add captions (subtitles) to every video with speech.
  2. For YouTube videos, add them in YouTube Studio › Subtitles; for Vimeo, in the video's Distribution › Subtitles settings.
  3. Check automatic captions and correct any mistakes.

Problems the editor can't fix

Some problems are in the template's code, like menus you can't use with a keyboard or focus outlines that don't show. Your Alleviator report marks these, and writes a message you can send to Squarespace Customer Care, or a Squarespace designer if your site uses custom code, with the pages and details they need. If someone else built your site, you can send them a developer link with time estimates, or ask us to fix it for you.
